We are in good shape as very little club night activities last year. We ran a Drawn Pairs Tournament in October 06 and a Christmas Club Night in December 06.
Last year’s balance of $2144.50 was improved to $2334.82 for the coming year.
We must continue to man the raffles to receive the Sports contribution.
COMPETITIONS (IN-HOUSE)
We ran most of the house competitions with the following results:
SENIOR Champion: Ron Wilkie
INTERMEDIATE “A” Champion: Ian Douglas
INTERMEDIATE “B” Champion: Gerry Kluck
JUNIOR Champion: Shane Kenner
HANDICAP Champion: Ian Douglas
OVER 60’s Champion: Kevin Whitburn
PAIRS Champions: Ron Wilkie & Don Wickens
BILLIARDS Champion: Ray Dahlberg
HANDICAPPED PAIRS (Drawn): Vickie Martin & Jim Parkin
Some discussion about the handicaps found that generally handicaps were satisfactory. Jim Buchanan thought that handicaps should not be too wide as this discouraged lower players from improving. The handicaps would be adjusted as necessary especially the grades of graded competition. There was also a need to edit members who had left or newly joined the club.
This competition was completed late. Because of lack of numbers, we could not sustain a graded system. Therefore we repeated 2005’s format of a 4 man team of any grade. So it became a Club v Club competition. Our “B” Team headed by Peter Allan, Rod Miller, Ian Douglas & Matt Thompson were pipped to the title on the very last match by The Masterton Club.
TOURNAMENTS (OPEN)
The adjunct hosted the 2006 Chartered Club Singles this year and was a huge success with good performances from home players – Jim Parkin and Peter Wilson getting closely knocked out at the Quarter Final stage. Ross Fafeita was unable to defend his title due to illness but made up for it with some excellent organisation and fund raising. Ross kept the tournament running smoothly with no time overruns. Winner was Steve Alderson from the Upper Hutt Club. NZ Masters executives were present and were so impressed that they are considering offering a Masters Tournament this year in Masterton.
A new tournament was kindly sponsored by Rod Miller – the Water-Mart $1000 Handicapped Pairs. Rod provided both funds for prizes and a new perpetual trophy. Thanks Rod. This attracted 20 pairs from the region with local champion Ron Wilkie pairing up with Mike Healey from Wanganui to take the $1000 first prize! Rod has indicated he wants this to be an annual event.
This was disappointing last year with very little interest being shown. We decided to put out a plea to members to show their support and suggestions for this year. Jim Buchanan suggested going back to Tuesday nights as other nights had been a disaster! Phil suggested a “kick off” night with food and prizes. Jim Buchanan suggested we change the format regularly to keep up interest. We discussed an end of year “bash” to invited members who supported the Club Night.
There was a huge disappointed expressed at such a poor turnout at the AGM. It was posted 2 weeks before the event with no response. This has become the standard – unfortunately it is always left to the few to do everything. Sometimes it’s a thankless task.
There is a need for more coat hooks in the playing area.
On the retirement of our table maintenance man Forrie, the executive appointed Malcolm to take over temporary duties. This may change as Executives are not allowed payment for duties within the club.
A letter of thanks needs to go to Rod for his support of the Adjunct and to Forrie for his contribution to looking after the tables for so long.
Minutes signed by new committee.
